John Barton is a partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP in Global Sourcing & Technology Transactions where he counsels global industry leaders on complex commercial and legal issues that arise in sourcing and technology transactions. Among the most experienced advisory practices worldwide, Pillsbury has structured more than 1,000 strategic outsourcing and technology transactions over the past 30 years, with an aggregate value exceeding half a billion dollars. John advises clients worldwide on precedent-setting, multibillion-dollar IT and BPO outsourcing deals; SaaS, BPaaS, and cloud-based contracts; enterprise software licenses; managed network services agreements; and product development and IP collaboration, referral, and licensing arrangements. John also advises banks, merchants, payment processors, and card networks on a wide range of payments industry issues and transactions. These representations include card processing and production transactions; corporate card programs; merchant acquiring and referral arrangements; BIN/ICA sponsorship; data use rights and products; and PCI and regulatory compliance.

  • Negotiated licensing, cloud computing, and SaaS transactions with Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Oracle, salesforce.com, Workday, and similar providers.
  • Negotiated multi-billion-dollar transformation and BPaaS (Business Process-as-a-service) deals for three large healthcare insurance providers.
  • Developed from SaaS, licensing and other policies and contracts to be used with resellers and end-users for large and small technology providers.
  • Advised large investment bank on several transactions supporting the roll-out of its new consumer finance platform and business.
  • Negotiated tokenization/encryption deals for merchants accepting credit cards.
